This large marigold brooch is gold plated, hand-enamelled and has 11 bohemian crystals in the centre. The locking safety catch ensures a secure fastening.
It is based on the Tagetes patula- The French marigold which is a member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) and originates in South Africa. The entire plant is harvested for its scent. In perfumes, it is mixed with sandalwood to produce the fragrance ‘attar genda’. This brooch is inspired by a painting by Caroline Maria Applebee (c.1799-1854)- Very little is known about Miss Applebee, like so many female artists of the time. She was an extremely talented amateur artist whose works went unpublished. Her paintings feature a large range of plants and flowers, including many more rare and exotic varieties of the day that would only survive under glass.
